About

Hello and welcome to my photolog ! After 24 years in France, 6 months in Switzerland, 5 years in Finland, 3 years in China (where I started this blog), I am now settled in Japan where I have been living for 3 years.

All recent photos taken with an Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the following Canon lenses: 16-35mm/f2.8L, 50mm/f1.4, 135mm/f2.0L and 70-200mm/f4.0L.

My other websites are :

www.benoa.net where I gathered the photos I took during the past 10 years throughout the world during my too frequent business trips and not frequent enough holidays.

image-japan.net a website dedicated to Tokyo and Japan.

This blog uses the WordPress platform with various customisations of my own. I was previously using MovableType but it was too painful to update and customise, not to mention the lack of nice plugins.

Enjoy my photos and do not hesitate to leave your mark by posting comments.

    Hi there

I really like your photos… I live in Kutchan (Niseko) Hokkaido…I saw you taking shots of Mt yotei one day recently… i figured it was you cos i saw some of your photos on nisekoguide.com (from flickr) and traced you back to here… great stuff… i have recently purchased a 50d (my first dslr) and i’m finding alot of inspiration from your photos and the excellent info you are giving on canon lenses with all the sample shots and descriptions… thanks it’s very helpful for a beginner! keep up the good work.

Hi Paul, thank you for the kind words :-) So it was you next to me with the tripod taking photos of Mt Yotei ?

yes i was doing my first timelapse ;) i should have said hello… but you had so many lenses … I had lens envy with my crappy EF-S18-200 kit lens :) … I’m thinking of getting an EF 50mm 1.4 … but i’m still saving my pennies… what’s your opinion of that lens for use in darker places?

On a 50D I would recommend the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM. Both are great in low light situation but 30mm is more usable on a 50D (the 50mm becomes 80mm, which is a bit too much).

thanks for the quick response! I’ll look into the Sigma then…it’s probably a little cheaper too ;) thanks again… Paul.

I own a 450D and my wife a 50D, all we need now is better lenses.
I really enjoy reading your blog and watching your photos.
Hope we’ll meet in Tokyo if it’s not already done ;)

    Micky

Thanks Micky. For a 450D and 50D, I would highly recommend a Sigma lens, the 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

    Thanks for the advice.
I was thinking about Sigma as well (much cheaper).

Hello. I just found your wonderful website, and I really enjoyed it. Your pictures look great, and I especially love the pictures of food. I want to buy a better camera, but I think I should learn how to take good pictures first. ;)

    Thank you for sharing!
