KDDI employee trying to find the right cable to install a fiber connection to our home. First results indicated that it worked rather nicely :
Introduction : while detailed technical analyses of a lens are useful to objectively assess its performance, most reviews unfortunately focus on that aspect only. Lenses are meant to take photos, and photos to be looked at, not measured. So, having owned and now owning a few Canon Lenses, I thought it would be interesting to ...
With the Brenizer Method you can create photographs with depth of field not possible with existing lenses. For instance, by combining twenty 50mm @ f/2.0 we get the equivalent of a 24mm lens with an aperture of f/1.0 ! To stitch the pictures, I recommend the excellent freeware from Microsoft : ICE.
Thanks to my friend, I was able to play with a Sony RX1 a little bit, so here is a short review of the Sony RX1. While there is no doubt about the quality of the images it produces, it does suffer from some design flaws, probably the results of compromises to fit such a ...
The first compact camera that produces what I would call impressive results :
Never thought I would own a Kerosene Heater, was not even aware of their very existence before coming to Japan ! This is an Aladdin Blue Flame, fancy name for something rather archaic.
Just for fun, a few shots with a Canon EF 8-15mm f/4 L USM Fisheye at Yodobashi. In order of appearance : 8mm, 9mm and 10mm. Note that the lens was dirty, covered with a thick layer of fingerprints…
Since 2010, in parallel to this blog, I had been enjoying Instagram quite much : ideal to quickly share pictures, nicely crafted interface and easy to use. Yes there were some controversies on the filters, yes some self-proclaimed experts declared that Instagram was killing photography. But seriously, the only thing Instagram was guilty of was ...

I think I need one ! Seen at the Axis building in Roppongi.
The Zilla App is totally useless… and therefore essential :D
Lightroom can now display and manage location data so I found a new use for my old Garmin. I was previously using GeoSetter but gave up tagging the location since LR was not using them.
Unfortunately it’s raining this evening in Tokyo so just a few shots around my house. In order of appearance (including the shot above) : ISO 6400, 3200, 4000, 12800, 12800, 12800, 2500. I didn’t expect to be able to use my 70-200mm/f4L at night one day :)
Airplay set-up and working with a Denon DNP-720SE. Why not an Apple TV ? Simple answer in two words : sound quality. If you did not know, the ATV has a lot of jitter on its optical digital output and as a result, most DAC’s – even really high end ones – will not sound ...
You know, for the kids ;-) The digital age makes it possible for my daughter to enjoy the very same cartoons I enjoyed as a kid 30 years ago !
Beating the weekend traffic in Tokyo means getting up at 06:00 and leaving home at 07:00.
After reaching almost 50,000¥ for electricity in December, we decided to try something else for heating our house – at least partially. Kerosene heater are ubiquitous in Japan so why not ? The Kerosene costs about 100¥ per liter and can easily be found in gas stations. Also, this Aladdin model does not require any ...
Rainy weekend in Tokyo so finished the upgrade of the TT-01 chassis of my Datsun 240 with 1) yeah racing conversion kit, 2) 7.2V 3600mAh Ni-MH battery and 3) RS-540 Sport Tuned motor. No brush less motor and LiPo battery as those would be waste on such a “cheap” chassis. With the iPhone on, ready ...
Interesting to see this on XBox Live ! I am actually looking forward to trying one…
Hasselblad 1000F in action at the Kagurazaka Festival in Tokyo.
My new TV has arrived :-) Larger screen but lighter and consumes less electricity than my 4 years old Sony… a lot cheaper too ! In a land of hidden protectionism, Korean manufacturers have to discount their TV quite much to sell them, and even then, people tend to suggest that Korean electronics are not ...
